How to install a new charging plug inside the scanner?

The charging plug has been broken out of the scanner. I've tried to use batteries but it didn't work. A person at radio shack told me the circuit has been cut, which is why batteries wouldn't work. When I took the scanner apart, I see three points broken off the circuit board in a small white square named J3. Any ideas?

How to install a new charging plug inside the scanner?

If I am picturing this correctly I see two senerios, you have a 3 point pad and the trace is broken between each of them. Then you could try soldering a #30-36ga buss wire across each of the breaks. Use a very fine tip low watt soldering iron and 60-40 solder with very little flux. Delicate operation, use patience. You should take the board out of the case if possible. If your are really "good" you could "pull" a solder bead across each break. The other picture I have is the whole connection is pulled up. Down side is you may have also broken the solder pads inside and through the board. If that is the case can't be fixed. But try re-soldering it back down to the board by pushing down at the same time heating with a soldering iron. Hopefully you won't short anything. You may get lucky and suceed.

Radio Scanner not working

Writer1, if your talking about the voltage adapter that plugs into the wall socket to the scanner, then probably what happened was the socket is soldered to the circuit board, and it probably got knocked loose. Possibly tore some solder traces loose, wouldn't know without looking at it. Take a pencil or pen and gently push on the center pin of the adapter and see if it moves around. It should not move. Any good electronic repair shop should be able to repair it. The only problem might be if the socket itself is cracked and broken. Their usually made of plastic, with the metal contacts inside. I know this is probably not the answer you were looking for, but it's the best I can do from long distance. Good luck with it and let us know how it comes out,,, Mechanic

I just received my new uniden scanner, and I am having problems with charging the radio. I was wondering do I have to have batteries in it ,to charge it with the dc that came along with the radio. How do I charge the radio without having to use batteries? I do have the in wall plug that came with it,but it's still not working without useing the batteries.

You need o have the battery installed in the radio in order to be charge. For the most part, the radio can be on and will charge you batteries. However, if you can, let it charge overnite... this usually is the recommendation given at the manual. I agree with BillB-SA... Let us know how it goes! Joe-k4jga

Batteries do not charge when plugged into mains

Check the batteries and the connections inside the scanner for corrosion. If necessary, clean both with a dry cloth, fine wire brush, or steel wool. Check the batteries for continuity and voltage. If they are shorted, "dead," or more than a year old you should replace them. Also check the output of your charger. It's rare for a charger to go out, but it does happen.Bill B

Cannot charge the piece attached to circuit board needs to be replaced i am thinking i need new circuit board need to know cost if too much i will purchase a new scanner thanks

Sorry, but your scanner is about 16 years old, and factory replacement parts are no longer stocked. If you really like this model though, you might check current eBay listings. I noticed three ongoing auctions for functional BC120XLT scanners, with current prices ranging from $11.50 to $29.99. If you could find a new factory board, it would cost you at least that much.Bill B.Listening in since the 60's

Only works when adapter's plugged in.

Does the battery indicator on the bottom left hand corner of the screen flash when you charge it ? If not it sounds like the batteries are over discarged. Hold in the function button on the side as yoe plug the charger in.

Am looking for the UNIDEN bearcat 30 channel 10 band scanner to change and find out how to delete some that don't contact, and have papers to install but can't. Would like to have the information concerning it and add on newer ones. Have had this one for over 10 years and hope to be able to keep it and put in every thing that is needed. Will be great to get the information that I think that came out with it and add new scanner frequencies.

You didn't provide a model number, but most Uniden scanners follow the same basic pattern for programming. Tune the scanner to the channel that you want to reprogram, enter the frequency (including decimal point), and then push the "E" or "Enter" key. Local frequencies can best be found in an on-line database such as CityFreq.com.
