SWR calibration waaay off the chart

I recently bought this CB, a big upgrade from my last POS. The factory installed antenna in my truck works fine, but when I recently upgraded my antenna to an oil coil, I can't get the SWR calibration to get below three or even meet the calibration mark on the meter. I've tried shortening the antenna, but the next step would be to start snipping pieces off. (I read that somewhere) Any before someone types it first - I'll say it.... Go back to the factory antenna! ;-)

I have had a Cobre 29 LTD Classic, a 29 NW LTD Classic and now a 29 LTD Chrome.It seems that the first two died because of possible bad antenna connections. I was able to calibrate the radios and adjust the antenna to get a very low SWR reading. The radios work for for varying time periods and then I start getting the antenna warning light even though I can calibrate the radios and get a low SWR . The warning light will come on for awhile then go away and I thought the problem was gone. Eventually the transmitters die. I just bought the new Cobra 29LTD Chrome and tried to set it up with my current Wilson 35 Antenna. After calibrating and adjusting the SWR and I try to transmit the antenna warning light came on. The antenna is a magnetic mount and I.ve located on the top rear and center of the roof of my pickup truck. I then bought a new Cobra antenna and tried it, I get the same problem. When trying to transmit sometimes the antenna warning light didn't come on, sometimes it would flicker when I key the mike but now it comes on steady. I can receive okay and sometimes get skip from as far away as Texas. I live in Massachusetts. Also, I use a cigarette lighter adapter for power. which I have used for years. Any ideas?


I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps. Tom

You are using an inline swr meter to set your swr right, not looking at the meter on the radio? Here is the process to set swr on an antenna: You must have an inline swr meter, which can be purchased online or from a truck stop. The ones at truck stops are cheap ones, but will do the trick for the most part.You connect your antenna 18ft coax to the antenna plug of the swr meter, and a jumper coax (any length) to the transmitter plug of the swr meter and then to the radio.Close all doors and make sure no one is messing around with the vehicle or antenna. You must be set up as you would normally be transmitting.Now set your cb radio to channel 40 and your swr meter to fwd. Key up your microphone and at the same time turn the set knob on the swr meter until the needle is at the line that reads set. Unkey your mic and set the the swr meter to ref. Key up again and note what your reading is. Now leave the swr meter in ref and turn the cb to channel 1. Key up and take your reading. If the reading on ch 1 is higher than ch 40 you must raise the stinger on your antenna. If ch 1 is lower than 40, you lower your stinger. You are trying to get lower than a reading of 3 and as close to 1.5 as possible. If you lower your stinger as far into the antenna as it will go and you need it shorter, you cut the bottom of your stinger no more than 1/2" at a time, and recheck your swr reading after each cut.Once you have gotten the best reading you can, connect your antenna directly back to the radio.The setting of your swrs is to make your antenna as efficient as possible, by trying to get it as close as you can to a 50ohm impedance. THE ONLY PART OF YOUR SYSTEM THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR SWR IS YOUR ANTENNA, not your coax and not your radio. Your radio and coax can give you false readings, but only the antenna can actually change the swr.On the swr meter, the fwd/ref switch stands for forward (power that is being transmitted out) and reflected (power that is reflected back into the radio.Just for information sake, the swr cal switch on your radio is used to set the meter to reflect the swr that your antenna is set at. The meter on your radio is like a dummy light on your car. ONCE AGAIN, YOU CAN NOT SET YOUR SWR ON YOUR RADIO, only the antenna.

Cobra 29 SWR, cal meter


Hello there: Rule of thumb is go by what the manual tells you. providing it is the manual that is for the radio.. that is why they make manuals for that particular radio a 1-1 to a 1-2 swr rating is really good providing you have no saturation on the internal filter. over saturation due to swr being set too high will eventually burn out the finals of a radio i have delt with radio's for about 17 years now so i really suggest consult the users manual and always use only a authorized dealer for that particular radio just like my cobra 2000 i am not going to send it to a shop that just does radios i want a authorized cobra dealer ok i hope that this really helps ok please dont forget to give this solution a rate for me it helps me out so i can continue to help out others like yourself. best regards MICHAEL

No antenna lite when transmitting


Antenna light should be a warning indicator for high VSWR..... simple rule of thumb for CB antenna.... the lower the frequency "channel" the longer the antenna length, higher the frequency "channel" the shorter the antenna length. Your vehicle is a ground plane, where you mount the antenna will also affect its operation and tuning. A properly tuned antenna will have lower reflection on the midband channels and gradually rise as you near the upper and lower end of the band. Some base loaded antennas will be noticably narrow in bandwidth, if you have that problem then tune it for the channel you use most!K40 has always been good for easy tuning and band coverage, center it on the vehicle top for good omni coverage!PS... always make sure your connectors are secure, a loose shield will ruin your day when adjusting SWR!

Transmitting and receiving


RF gain should be all the way up. Turn the squelch all the way down. Turn the ANL/NB to just ANL.Turn the dynamic up at least 3/4.Once you have confirm you can receive and transmit, then you can turn up the squelch up until white noise just stops.Make sure you are on 19 by the highway. Key up and say break break one nine, can some one give me a radio check please.you should get a response.Your RF gain is how much you receive. the higher it is the more you receive. In normal operation there is no need for it ever to be less the all the way on.Squelch is just to knock out fuzz, and if you only want to hear people close not far. A little less then half way is a basic setting.the ANL switch is the automatic noise limiter. if you have interference from your vehicle, like engine noise, turning this on will quiet that. If it is extreme engine noise then switch it to NB, noise blanker. It is just a more intense setting.your dynamic is how loud your audio is. if its low or all the way down, you will not transmit audio loud enough for people to hear. If its a stock radio and has not been tuned, if you turn it all the way up, that is fine.

Swr too high


Check your antenna. Make sure it is getting a proper ground. Check where whip goes into coil or base. Make sure all allen screws are tight and whip is not either all the way down to the base or up to the top. If antenna is mounted; make sure that it has a good ground. You might have to remove some paint around the base to get a good connection. DO NOT TRANSMIT WITH A HIGH SWR. YOU CAN BURN OUT THE EXPENSIVE POWER OUTPUT TRANSISTOR. Hope it helps. Tom

How do I fix SWR spikes?


For CB radio that operates in a relatively narrow bandwidth, you should be able to obtain "perfect" SWR readings for all 40 channels. That would be a reading of 1.1 : 1 or less. The rule of thumb goes like this: if SWR is HIGHER on HIGHER FREQUENCY (Ch. 40 is higher than Ch. 1) then the antenna whip is too HIGH (too long/tall) therefore it must be shortenned. And vice versa.Trimming the length requires patience especially when the reading has reached 1.5 : 1 or lower/better. Make a 5mm trim each time and then measure SWR then continue trimming until you are satisfied with the results. The spike must be contributed by faulty electronic components inside the radio. The radio must be checked by a technician. But before you do that, trim your whip first and see what happens. Ideally, the length of the coax cable must be trimmed as well. But, since we don't live in an ideal world, we can ignore that for the time being. Goodluck. es
