Brand New Cobra microtalk won't work!

I bought a pair of Cobra Microtalk PR 650 WX from Wal-mart today.....charged them up, and tried to turn them on to test them. According to the owner's manual, there's supposed to be a set on tones to indicate that the units are on, which never sounded. The display works fine, channel selection works fine, etc. But, they won't transmit nor recieve. I bought these for an upcoming trip, the package is way beyond damaged so I can't talke them back to Wal-Mart...Help!!

I had to replace some of the cheap Chinese NiCad batteries to get mine to work. Check them all with a voltmeter, they should be at least 1.1 volts DC.

29 cobra ltd brand new everything swr cant set my swr pegs out all the way to the right when i key up cant even get the right hight for my 4' firestick also the antenna light is very dim

If your coax isn't shorted somewhere (which can easily happen) then I would say the problem lies in your amplifier. Your amplifier needs to be matched to your radio by adjusting the input and output capacitors. Not many so called "techs" can do this and Bubba sure as hell don't know. It take proper equipment and the right parts to do the job right.

Have 9 COBRA microTalk 2-way radios that we use on the pool deck for officiating swim meets. (One got wet.) All of a sudden all 9 are not working. I have been the coordinator since we bought these and cannot figure out why we can receive but cannot transmit. Went out and bought new headsets. New headsets did not fix problem. All radios are set exactly on same frequency (6 and 20). AFter I set them, I lock so that radios cannot be altered. Radios are not that old... maybe 3 years. In excellent condition. I charge the night before every meet.

Just in case these radios have been modified, or have lost there settings, please perform the following:All radios must be tuned to the same channel and privacy code to communicate. To successfully communicate using a privacy code, both the sending and receiving radios must be tuned to the same channel and to the same privacy code system (CTCSS or DCS) and privacy code number. Each channel will remember the last privacy code system and number you select. The privacy code 00 is not a privacy code, but allows all signals to be heard on a channel that is set to 00 on both the CTCSS and DCS systems.Channels 1 through 7 are shared with FRS/GMRS. Channels 8 through 14 are FRS only.Channels 15 through 22 are GMRS only.To select a CTCSS privacy code:1. After selecting a channel, press the Mode/Power button until the CTCSS icon appears and the small numbers next to the channel number flash on the display. If DCS is turned on at the channel selected, the display will flash the CTCSS icon and "OFF." To switch from DCS to CTCSS, press the Channel Up or Channel Down button while the display is flashing "OFF." The display will then show the small numbers flashing and you will then be able to proceed to step 2.2. Press using the Channel Up or Channel Down button to select a privacy code. You can hold the Up or Down button for fast advance. 3. When your desired CTCSS privacy code is displayed, choose one of the following:a. Press the Mode/Power button to enter the new setting and proceed to other functions.b. Press the Lock button to enter the new setting and return to Standby mode.c. Do not press any buttons for 15 seconds to enter the new setting and return to Standby mode.To select a DCS privacy code:1. After selecting a channel, press the Mode/Power button until the DCS icon appears and thesmall numbers flash on the display (01 through 83).2. Press using the Channel Up or Channel Down button to select a DCS privacy code. You can hold the Up or Down button for fast advance.3. When your desired DCS privacy code is displayed, choose one of the following:a. Press the Mode/Power button to enter the new setting and proceed to other functions.b. Press the Lock button to enter the new setting and return to Standby mode.c. Do not press any buttons for 15 seconds to enter the new setting and return to Standby mode. For Cobra Customer Assistance:9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday to Friday(except Holidays) - (514) 683-1771, ext. 2-264 (phone).

Fr60 quiet and distorted

The one that looks new but wont turn on, looks like the battery is dead, try swapping the battery from the other set that works and then try it. also try swapping the parts from the other sets and see if it works. Speakers dont fail so easily on two way radios.

Cobra 148 gtl new model

Hello bluzfan, Do you remember the old 40 channel CBs? they used basic A3A transmission (dual sideband single carrier)remember how you got crosstalk sometimes, if your power was too high? Then they went to 80 channel CBs (using a single side band as Lower Side Band (lsb) and the other as the upper side band (usb))? more crosstalk but they invented anl (automatic noise limiter)circuitry to compensate. Now you have the 120 channel CB which uses a form of side band multiplexing (20QAM) to generate 3 times more channel density 40 X 3 = 120. Here is my problem; Cobra should not have done this because you will have massive crosstalk and unaudible sounds because of the increase in channels but not an increase in initial (physical)bandwidth. I hate to tell you this but the only cure for the is to use it in 40 channel or 80 channel mode forget the 120 channel mode, or get a radio with better channel separation.

Open the radio up and find the L22 Can/Pot. It's the one with the wire soldered on top. With both fine and coarse Claifier/Voice Locks in the 12 O'Clock positions, confirm, then listen for someone that is on the correct frequency and turn this pot (small ferrite core inside) with a small plastic preferred screwdriver, until they sound clear. Do this for USB as well except, the Can/Pot is L59. Don't adjust the VR5 (transmit) unless you need to.

Hello,I have four walkie talkie brand new from Kenwood, UBZ LF 14, and they work in the PMR band. Now I'm living in Italy and the PMR band is not allowed for family use by the Government The family radio band here is the "PMR 446" and kenwood supplies the UBZ L J 8 for the Italian Market. I know that the FMR frequency is around 460 mhz, and the Italian frequency for family use starts on 446 Mhz... Now,beside that I have 14 channels as USA specs and the Italian specs assigns only 8 channels..(that is not a problem) Is there any change to modify the UBZ LF 14 tho the italian frequency specifications..? I know that most kenwood are programmable but this morning I have benne speaking with Kenwood Italy and they told me to buy 4 new walkie talkie for Italian use.. I would take your suggestion please. Bye, Elio Amato

Elio: Your local Kenwood rep is correct for a couple of reasons:1. The cost to modify your current radios to operate on the Italian band would be higher than the price of new radios.2. Operating modified radios would be a violation of Italian laws.Bill B

If radios are brand new then I would take them back to the store for warranty exchange. The other opton is to vist a local radio service center and ask the tech to jump the battery. if the battery falls below a certain voltage it might need a quick jump sart from a power supply with a higher voltage normally 12 volts works well...
