Cobra 29 NW LTD does nothing

I was recently given this radio from a friend of mine. He bought the radio new about 2 months before. The radio worked fine. He took the radio to a local CB shop to get some extras added on. As far as I know he had talkback added, a meter that changes colors, and he had it tuned up. When he got it back it did nothing at all. So he gave it to me. Is there anything that I should check out.

Transmitting and receiving

RF gain should be all the way up. Turn the squelch all the way down. Turn the ANL/NB to just ANL.Turn the dynamic up at least 3/4.Once you have confirm you can receive and transmit, then you can turn up the squelch up until white noise just stops.Make sure you are on 19 by the highway. Key up and say break break one nine, can some one give me a radio check should get a response.Your RF gain is how much you receive. the higher it is the more you receive. In normal operation there is no need for it ever to be less the all the way on.Squelch is just to knock out fuzz, and if you only want to hear people close not far. A little less then half way is a basic setting.the ANL switch is the automatic noise limiter. if you have interference from your vehicle, like engine noise, turning this on will quiet that. If it is extreme engine noise then switch it to NB, noise blanker. It is just a more intense setting.your dynamic is how loud your audio is. if its low or all the way down, you will not transmit audio loud enough for people to hear. If its a stock radio and has not been tuned, if you turn it all the way up, that is fine.

As I understand from a tech friend of mine, most truck beds are not grounded well enough. Perhaps you could borrow/purchase a magnet mount antenna and locate it on the roof, for testing. Then you would have it narrowed down to the location.

I have a cobra 29 classic ltd black and chrome bt edition, no matter what antenna i use or how low my swr is i still receive nothing but static all day on all 40 channels. i can transmit just fine but my receive or comeback is always faint and garbled or nothing at all, or i just dont hear anything at all when i know there is chatter on the radio, what can i do to solve this or pinpoint the problem

You have the squelch turned all the way to the left am I correct? First of all there are not a whole people using the radio today and those that are are probably no where near you therefore when your radio is on all you will recieve is static and a whole lot of ground noise .Now to eliminate this change your ground to a better location using a multimeter from your antenna to where you ground it .

Looking at the schematic TR23 colector ties in with the power switch ,check D22 it's a 9.1 to 10 volt zener diode also check C11 an D21. TR23 shows to be a 2SC1096 I would go ahead and replace it.Be sure that the CB-PA switch is in good working order; Good luck maybe this helped.

I Cant Pick Up Any Signals On my Cobra 25 LTD 40-Channels Base CB Radio all i hear is nothing. no truckers saying stuff. i just get white noise i do have an antenna. it is a tv antenna w/ bunny ears :) i want to talk to other cb people. Does the cold water pipe really work a a good antenna? someone told me that the cold water pipe under my sink is the best antenna, is this fact or fiction? thank you sooo much for your help. -Chris

Your problem is probably the rabbit ears. They are for tv in the 54+ Mhz and CB is 27 Mhz. For simplicity, go to Radio Shack and get a back of the radio indoor antenna. They run under $20. If you want to get more; try a roof antenna or a 1/2 wave cb marine antenna outside. Hope it helps.3 Tom

Losed all i have a 97 model cobra 29 ltd classic with talk back and is sliltly tweeked and i turned it on and it worked fine a few hours later i turned it back on to try and get ahold of a friend but i got nothing. when my friend arived i hooked it up in his truck on a diffiernt antanna and wiring harness witch fit and ext. speaker and still got no noise exept  the talk back from the mic. no static or anything. the board inside is not burnt nothing inturnal seems to be the problem any ideas?

The talk back may be nothing more than a 10 ohm resistor shorted across the pa/external speaker outputs. If this is the sitution, the resistor may have damaged the audio chip. Remove the resistor and see if this corrects the problem. If not you may need to replace the audio chip. Hope this helps Ed NC Electronic Mills Wyomign

I'm a trucker with a Cobra 29 NW LTD Classic CB radio that I have used in several trucks over the past 2 years. Two days ago I hooked it up in my current truck, a 2014 Pro Star. Got the polarity wrong and as soon as I touched the wires together, the in-line fuse blew. I replaced the fuse, and this time wired it correctly. I also connected the antenna and external speaker connections. I was delighted that the unit powered up. All seemed well until I tried to transmit or receive. I found I could do neither. The "RX/TX" light stays lit all the time, regardless of whether or not I am using the "mic". It even stays on when I physically disconnect the microphone cable. It produces no audio at all, and when I try to use the mic, it has no effect on the meter. I can't hear anyone, and I assume no one can hear me. I have tried all manner of different settings, but nothing makes it work. Any thoughts on this problem ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Phil

I have an old 23 channel cobra 29. it lights up but does nothing

It is not a dirt issue, the final transmitter is bad. This is caused normaly from a bad antenna or wire going to the antenna. These can be replaced. There is one big on near the back of the radio, 3 prong black transistor connected to a piece of metal (heat sink), unsolder the old one and obtain an exact replacement. (perhaps radio shack or repair shop), solder the new one in. This will sometimes be screwed to the heatsink on the very back of the board connected to the rear of the radio. Before reconnecting the radio have the antenna checked for damage.
