The whip on my antenna came loose.

I Talked a lot on the CB, before I realised, what was wrong.the SWR, was'nt that far off. But after re-tuning the antenna, I noticed a couple day's later, that I had no squelch. Then it was intermitent. I checked my SWR again on ch1 & ch40. The SWR didd'nt change. But when I held the mic button down. The needle jumped back and forth. From 1 clear into the red..And both red light's came on, just every now and then. I checked the mic connection, even tried a different mic. Is my radio worth repairing?

I have a Midland 1001Z 40-Channels Base CB Radio and a Magnetic-mount CB antenna. 29" stainless steel whip and 6" spring. About 46" high overall. All bought from / in Alberta canada. I hooked up a SWR meter to it to match them up. The end problem i had was when i was adjusting the antenna to get it at 2 or below. I cant get it to come down from 3. Not sure what I should do from this point. Can i cut down the antenna or replace it ? should i change it to a single antenna that is a Heavy-duty dual trucker kit with 1.2m (4') 1/4" wave helically-wound antenna, 20-gauge copper wire, factory-tuned ?

Try Grounding it better. Its supposed to equal 8.5 ft.(102 inches) but the coil may make that in all.You can clip like 1/8 inch off at time until it goes 2.1 Swr. Thats a good standard. 1.5 SWR is desired. If it don't have a coil with it that may be the problem. You could turn it into a 8.5 ft. antenna by buying a 102" inch whip to screw into the base of your antenna, it depends if it holds or not. You could build you a matcher like this with a solder gun+solder and 2 resistors. Get you a box with 2 female cb antenna inputs. Drill a hole for both Cb antenna inputs into box. Place them into holes screw nuts down snug. Run a copper wire inside to both grounds or a plate somewhat. Run a thick gauge copper wire from center cb ANT INPUT(2) to other input of ANT INPUT(1). Solder 2 100 ohms in parallel from input to Ground. If you could take apart your radio(eliminating the box idea). Just Solder 2 (100 ohm) resistors to your Antenna output then put it back together. 50 OHM MATCH HERE Is the main idea. I've used 75 OHM Tv coax and reduced SWR.

Transmitting Squeal I receive signals very crisp and clear on all channels. However when I key the mic, whoever is receiving my signal, hears a very loud mono tone squeal. None of the controls have any affect on the noise, yet when I move the mic around in the cabin, the squeal changes tone. Also when I wrap my hand around the mic cord at the top where the coils begin, the squeal goes away, the digital power meter goes into the red, and I transmit just fine. I am using: New Midland 1001Z radio, original stock mic that came with the unit, 3 ft adjustable Firestik antenna and a Hood Channel Mount kit that includes 18 feet of Fire-Flex coaxial cable with the Fire-Ring connector. I have the power connected to the fuse block under the hood and ran through the firewall using the supplied rubber grommet. I kept the ground wire short and found a nice ground near the steering arm. I have heard that shortening the coax cable affects the whole system so I kept it at the stock length. However since I am short on room, the excess slack is coiled up and stored behind a dash panel. My guess for my problem is either the coiled up coax, the coax running along the hood channel, or bad grounding. If it is a bad ground, how would I check for a solid ground? Also the antenna and mounting kit does not mention anything about grounding the antenna, do I need to do that with my set up? (See picture above) If so, how? Thanks for your help!

I hooked up my radio and when i push the mic the red antenna light came on so i grounded the radio better still did it changed the braket for the antenna still same thing changed antenna still samr thing running out of things to do what is the problem?

Sometimes the red light coming on is a sign that your radio is transmitting. On my radio if I get two red lights then I have a bad match and I check it out to make sure it isn't to off but as long as you are under a 3 talk all you want but you should get the match down to at least 1.5:1

Is it my CB antenna or something else

First off, Midland makes a fine radio. Make sure your squelch is turned all the way down to receive distant signals (down meaning counter clockwise). The through the glass antennas are not the best thing in the world. I personally use a 102" whip and a 6" spring on a modified mirror mount. It is installed on the tailgate side of the tool box. The TX and RX is amazing. Wilson and K40 make great antennas also.

Procedures to install cb antennae mount

The end without a connector was once attached to an antenna. You need a proper antenna in order to use the radio. If you were to buy a new antenna, it will come with a length of cable attached. Even if you were to buy a new antenna, don't expect good performance from the radio unless you get the antenna properly adjusted. Yes, it will work "out of the box", but probably not as good as it could. There is a device called an SWR bridge, it's used to measure the SWR and the user then adjusts the antenna for the lowest reading by trial and error adjustment of the antenna.
