Programming Motorola type II system

HI, I live in Prince William County Virginia and I have been trying to program my scanner for a motorola type II trunking system to monitor local police and fire departments. I have been using "radioreference.com" for a guide. I am new to scanning and I still don't understand some things about trunk tracking. I porgrammed the system name of "Prince William County" from radioreference.com and it is a motorola type II system. I followed the directions according to the manuel and the directions on uniden's support site and the ID's show up according to their names but all I hear is this weird dig

The BR330T is an analog only scanner. Prince William County's system is 800 MHz digital, which your scanner cannot receive. You can receive the fire department simulcast of "5A" (their fire dispatch channel) on 154.325 in analog mode.

What Type Of Scanner Do I Need?

Well, the above answer is somewhat correct, but could use a little clarification.A radio that transmits in a P25 format is digital. Digital transmissions can be trunked, but don't have to be (as is the case here). In the case of scanners, every major brand scanner out there that works on digital transmissions will decode trunked of conventional digital and analog transmissions. The current digital models run anywhere from $399 to $599. Radio Shack has 2 newer models out that will do digital...the PRO-106 (handheld) and the PRO-197 (base/mobile). These have been on sale recently for $399. Uniden also makes digital trunking scanners..the latest models being the 396 (portable) and the 996 (base/mobile). While the 996 has the capability to be used with a GPS in a mobile setting, this feature isn't really worth the added cost, especially when compared to the feature rich PRO-197.There are older model digital scanners, such as the Radio Shack PRO-96, PRO-2096 and the Uniden 250D and 796D. While these receive digital transmissions, the newer scanners have upgraded digital decoding algorithms that provide better audio quality and intelligibility. Also, the older scanners may not be able to decode the 700 MHz public safety band, which is becoming increasingly more popular since the 800 MHz band is quickly filling up.One word of caution...be sure that the agency you are trying to monitor is not using encrypted transmissions. If you don't know...look up the system on radioreference.com. Channels that are encrypted usually have an "E" designation under the "mode" column. These transmissions CANNOT be decoded by any of the scanners currently on the market, even if you do have the encryption key.I hope this helps you with your buying choices. Good luck!

I have all talkgroups for our Motorola Smartnet system scanning properly EXCEPT one talk group.. I have spoken to our system manager twice to be sure I have the proper hex or dec info program this talk group.. I have entered the info as HEX and as Dec and it will not receive any signals ALL other talkgroups work correctly.. This is a fire dept tac 1 channel

Usually with most police, fire medical etc, one set of channels is encrypted or is even used as a data channel. If you have all the rest working fine your last may bne just such a set and the only thing capable of catching the output would be a radio with the required hardware built in (another motorola) I suspect this is what you are finding.

BCD369T problem My BCD396T scanner is no longer "seeing" ID's. While scanning/searching for ID's on programmed systems, the display switches from system ID to system ID rapidly... not seeing any transmissions. There is no signal strength (bar signal at top of display is missing). Any ideas of what I may have inadvertently done to my scanner, and will I be able to fix the problem on my own?

You might be able to, if you understand how to reset the scanner's binary CPU board. But honestly, I had the same scanner with the same problem, and one way to fix it is to reprogram the entire scanner's memory. The second way is expensive, send it to a radio repair store. I'd recommend to just reprogram it and see if it works then. If no avail, you might need to have it looked at, but reprogramming it helped my problem. It's time consuming I know, but it worked.Best Regards,Gavin93

Pro-164 scanner stops receiving when Motorola talk-ids are progra

I had to buy the Radio Shack USB cable 20-047 and install the driver for it and then I downloaded a program named "Win97" from the www.starrsoft.com website as listed on page 21 of the Pro-164 manual. The cable costs $34.99 and with tax you are looking at about $37.88. The "Win97" software must be registered for it to work after a 30-day free trial period. That's approx $25.00. This is the ONLY WAY to go !! You put in everything on the software GUI and then upload it to the PRO-164. Works like a champ !!!!!!
