Range dropped and eventually radio is dead

Radios were great when new. I actually recovered and repaired one that was run over by a car! At some point the range decreased to a few hundred feet so we stopped using them. Recently I got them out to troubleshoot, and they were just plain dead. No corrosion inside, no loose parts. Would like to find someone who is willing to repair them. Not many user-serviceable parts inside, so I wouldn't mind finding someone more qualified.

Will not turn on. Other 1 works fine. New batteries. Radio like new, little use.

Ted, I have pondered your dilemma. When you say the radio is "dead as a door nail", are you saying it will not power on at all? If so, the problem has to be with the battery or battery connection. This radio is not a repairable radio, and there would be nothing about the circuitry inside which would be user repairable. I do think your solution might be much easier. If you are using a rechargeable model T5725, you can try a simple test to check the charge capability of the radio. Plug in the charger to the charge port and turn the radio on. If the radio does NOT power up, then you have a battery contact problem. If the radio does power up when using the charger, but not without it, then you have a battery problem. IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT transmit or push the PTT while the unit is plugged into the charger. This can cause serious damage. We are only recommending this as a test of the power system. Other thoughts concerning power would be check your battery to see it is in the correct direction. Check the contacts to see if they are clean. If not, use a pencil eraser to clean them. If this does not help, post again with more information.

Motorola Talkabout 200 - how do i set main channel only? i need to set for example channel 1 and subchannel 0 (1-0; 2-0; etc) but i can only set a main channel with subcode for example (1-1; 1-2; 1-38

Here is a link to the user guide for the T289. It is the closest we have fofound to the T200 guide: http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/manuals/T289_User_Manual.pdfIt may be of assistance to you. Honestly, we were thinking the early model T200 and T250 did not have the interference eliminator code., just 14 channels. However, if you are experiencing other numbers, it is possibly the code.Best regards.

Motorola Talkabout t5000 sold at Costco (several years ago) with a mini T4500. An insert was included so the mini could talk to the others. It says to hold the menu button down and then select 0 for the interference eliminator code. Problem is, I can't get to 0. Are the channels and the interference code the same thing? If different, I can't get to the interference code by doing what they say (and trying different variations therein). thanks

Your frequency and your code are two separate settings. When you walk your way through the menu the frequency choice will come before the code choices. Frequencies will count from 1-14 or 1-22. Codes (aka interference eliminator) will have may more choices and one of them will be Zero. It appears from looking at the T4500 manual that it does not offer "code". So on this one the code is already "zero" (off). On your T5000 you should be able to navigate to the CODE using the menu button, then use your plus or minus button to get you to "zero", then press the PTT button to save your choice. Best regards. Our first thought when reading your dilemma is to check the Menu Lock. Holding the Menu button in for 3 seconds will lock/unlock your buttons. You should have an icon depicting a lock displayed on the screen.

Motorola mj270r no range

Handheld radios talking line-of-sight with no obstacles will communicate approx. 2 miles. When talking from inside a building to outside, you can expect 1/4 to 1/2 miles range. Holding the antenna perpendicular to the ground gives you the best range. Height and placement of the antenna determines range. If you were on a mountain you could talk many miles into the valley below. However, in real world applications, range is limited. It can even be limited by the body fluid of the person wearing the radio on their hip, or blocked somewhat by the metal of the automobile one is riding in.Channels 18-22 are listed as GMRS channels and may have more power than 1-17. The FRS channels are limited to 1/2 watt. But don't be fooled wattage doesn't equal distance. Higher wattage may give you a little more distance, but mostly it will give you clarity in the fringe areas. Here is a link to the user guide: http://www.motorola.com/web/Business/Products/ConsumerTwo-WayRadios/Talkabout-MJ270R-Two-Way-Radio/_Documents/MJ270.pdfA link to Motorola's page about the radio: http://www.motorola.com/Business/US-EN/Business+Product+and+Services/Two-Way+Radios+-+Consumers/MJ270R_Talkabout_Two-Way-Radio_B2B_US-ENAnd I see where they are quoting 27 miles*, and go on to say:*How far can I expect my radios to communicate? The communication range quoted is calculated under optimum conditions, with an unobstructed line of sight. Actual range will vary depending on terrain and conditions, and is often less than the maximum possible. Your actual range will be limited by several factors including, but not limited to, terrain, weather conditions, electromagnetic interference and obstructions.Unfortunately, we are seldom in idea conditions. Radio-to-radio is going to get you 1/4 mile to 2 miles in real conditions.Best regards.

Sub-Channels This is NOT a FRS 250 model, but had to choose it to get into the site. I don't know what model it is, but it is an older one. Adjusting the channel and sub-channel on my pair of old Motorola TalkAbouts (no model number on units, no manual). I can get the channels to change, but not 'stick'. Can't get the sub-channels to change. I know they are on the same channel, different sub-channels. Anybody know (1) what model this may be so I can search for a manual and more importantly (2) how to change the sub-channels?

Here is a link to a list of older TalkAbout user manuals. Use the pulldown menu to look at various models. In general, most of them program similarly by using the menu button to select the feature and the PTT button to lock in the change. http://www.giantintl.com/motorolafrsold.htm
